Vital Perspectives - Belonging in Schools
Vital Perspectives is a four-part storytelling series that explores key public health issues in Oxford County, Elgin County, and the City of St. Thomas. Each installment highlights the voices of those directly impacted such as community members, public health professionals, and local partners, offering a deeper understanding of the challenges we face and the solutions we’re working toward together.
The third story in the series explores the connection between belonging and health.
Why belonging matters
Belonging goes beyond just feeling included, it plays a powerful role in our health and well-being. For youth, especially during adolescence, feeling a sense of belonging is essential for healthy development. It shapes how they see themselves, how they connect with others, and how they navigate life’s challenges.
Youth and belonging
A strong sense of belonging can:
-
Support identity formation
-
Improve coping skills
-
Reduce the risk of anxiety and depression
-
Protect against loneliness
-
Strengthen academic and emotional outcomes
According to the 2019–2020 Canadian Community Health Survey, 7 in 10 youth aged 12 and older reported a strong or somewhat strong sense of belonging to their local community. This kind of connection builds confidence and supports healthy identity development.
Public health and schools: A strong partnership
Our Healthy Schools Team plays a vital role in school communities. They collaborate with educators to:
-
Identify student health priorities
-
Promote positive relationships
-
Create welcoming spaces for all students
By supporting early intervention and building resilience, these partnerships help schools prioritize mental well-being as part of everyday learning.
Community voices
Parents, teachers, coaches, and community members can all help create inclusive, supportive environments where youth feel seen and valued.
