Food Handler Certification

Food Handler training is an excellent opportunity to learn the safe way to prepare food. Whether you operate a restaurant, take-out, catering, or mobile food premises, or are working directly with high-risk groups such as children and the elderly, training is designed to meet the needs of your staff and your customers. Training provides knowledge of:

  • The role of the Public Health and understanding foodborne illness
  • Understanding bacteria
  • Preventing foodborne illness
  • Personal hygiene, sanitation, pest control

For Elgin County Residents

It is recommended that anyone working in the food industry acquire Food Handler Certification.
Certification is valid in Ontario for five (5) years.

Self-Study

  1. Download and study the FREE PROVINCIAL FOOD HANDLER TRAINING MANUAL
    This resource is provided free by the Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care (MOHLTC).
  2. Upon completing the training manual, contact the St. Thomas Site to write the Certification Exam ($10.00 fee; exam dates listed below): (519) 631-9900.

Two ways to get your food handler training in Oxford County

Fanshawe College offers a Food Handler’s certification course in our area. Education may also be obtained online through In Good Hands. Find other Ministry approved courses on the Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care’s website

About Fanshawe College’s Food Handler training

Fanshawe College training (courses are listed alphabetically). This course is run regularly in partnership with Southwestern Public Health. The cost is $50.50. The course is held over two days in Tillsonburg and Woodstock. 

In Good Hands online Food Handler training

In Good Hands offers food handler training online. There is a $25 fee for this course. There are 15 modules that you go through and a test at the end of each module. Once the course has been completed the individual needs to call SWPH Woodstock Site to set up an appointment to write the certificate exam at an additional $10 cost. You must come to your exam with a copy of the Student Achievement Report indicating your ID number. A certificate is provided upon successful completion (pass) of written exam.
