School-Based Vision Screening
Vision is important for social development, health and education. Children who see better learn better!
What is school-based vision screening?
Southwestern Public Health (SWPH) offers free in-school vision screening to students in senior kindergarten. A staff member from SWPH will spend about 15 minutes with each student to complete three non-invasive tests:
- A test with a handheld machine called an autorefractor
- A test for visual acuity
- A test for depth perception
Students will receive a report to bring home following the screening.
What happens after the screening?
School-based vision screening can help identify children with potential vision problems. Based on the screening, we may recommend a visit to an Optometrist (eye doctor) for a full eye exam. Any required follow-up visits to the Optometrist are covered for children 0-19 with a valid Ontario health card.
