Falling can cause serious injury and even death. Anyone can fall, but the risks increase as you get older. The good news is that falls are preventable.
Tips to stay on your feet
If you are an older adult, report any falls to your health care provider and follow these tips to prevent falling:
- Exercise regularly to maintain strength and flexibility
- Eat balanced meals to avoid dizziness or tiredness
- Spend time with friends and/or family
- Plan ahead and take your time
- Visit your doctor regularly
- Drink alcohol responsibly
- Use medication safely and discuss side effects (e.g., dizziness) with your doctor or pharmacist
- Wear supportive shoes
- Use walking aids correctly
- Remove clutter and secure rugs and mats
- Use night lights to brighten dark hallways, bathrooms, stairs
- Do a home safety check regularly
