COVID-19 Cases in Individuals Experiencing Homelessness in St. Thomas

Cases of COVID-19 have been rising steadily across the region over the past six weeks.
The number of cases per 100,000 people and the percent test positivity are among the highest in the province. There are cases in every age group and outbreaks in schools, workplaces, childcare centres, and places of worship. This week, a cluster of approximately ten confirmed or probable cases among people experiencing homelessness was identified in the City of St. Thomas.
The City of St. Thomas is working with Southwestern Public Health to implement the most appropriate infection prevention and control protocols for those who must be isolated. The County of Elgin, Ontario Health West, St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital, and many community and health care agencies are also supporting the approximately 10 individuals with coordination of services, health needs, and their basic needs (food, laundry, personal hygiene) during isolation.
Currently, most of these individuals are housed at the former Wellington Street Public School at 50 Wellington Street St. Thomas, which has been converted by the City into a temporary isolation site.
There is a high degree of collaboration to support the health and well-being of these individuals while minimizing the risk of further COVID-19 transmission. The size and scope of the outbreak mirrors those that have occurred in other settings; the main difference however is that those impacted do not have a home at which to see through their 10 day period of self-isolation.
The general community is reminded to vigilantly follow public health measures shown to mitigate transmission; vaccination, physical distancing, screening for symptoms, testing and staying home while unwell. Individuals who are unvaccinated, or who are eligible to book a booster dose can book online at www.covidvaccinelm.ca. Many appointments are available.
