SWPH Provides Guidance to Individuals with First Dose of Astra Zeneca
Recently the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) made recommendations on the interchangeability of COVID-19 vaccines for second doses following studies from Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain.
Ontarians who received their first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine at a pharmacy may be offered a second dose of the same vaccine, or a dose of an mRNA vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) as their second dose. These second dose options will be provided only after the recommended 12-week interval.
“If you received a first dose of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine from a pharmacy or from a family health care provider, they will provide you with your second dose 12 weeks after the first. A second dose of AstraZeneca or of an mRNA vaccine like Pfizer or Moderna will ensure you have strong protection against the virus. Both will count as a completed vaccine series,” says Dr. Joyce Lock, Medical Officer of Health for Southwestern Public Health.
For those who already have a second dose booked at a pharmacy, no action is required. For those who do not have a second dose booked, your pharmacy will reach out to you to schedule your second dose appointment. If you have questions about what second dose vaccine is right for you, or need to discuss this information further, please contact your doctor, nurse practitioner, or pharmacist before you book your vaccine appointment.
