Southwestern Public Health to close mass immunization clinics after nearly two years of operation
February 17 marks the end of an era that saw hundreds of vaccinators administer more than 480,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccine to area residents.
In March 2021, Southwestern Public Health opened its doors to two Mass Immunization Clinics - one in Woodstock and one in St. Thomas. A third soon followed in Tillsonburg.
The organization began a vaccination campaign against Covid-19 that would become the largest undertaking in the organization’s history. At their peak, these clinics vaccinated more than 2500 people per day. As of late January, more than 480,000 doses had been administered to more than 209,000 individuals cumulatively.
Over the years, the clinics underwent several iterations as demand evolved. Today the pace is such that demand can be met by the staff of the health unit’s vaccine preventable diseases team within the context of its regular operations.
“It has taken hundreds of staff, dozens of volunteers, and the commitment of innumerable partners to stand these clinics up and keep them operating for nearly two years,” says Jaime Fletcher, the Program Manager who oversaw the opening of the clinics in 2021. “Moreover, thousands of community members championed the benefits of vaccination, shared our information on social media, provided rides to those needing them, and encouraged friends and families to get vaccinated. This milestone is shared by all of you.”
“February 17 is the last day we’re offering walk-in, or appointment based Covid-19 vaccination, five days a week, through dedicated clinics,” says Fletcher. “However, community members wishing to get vaccinated after that date may do so by visiting ontario.ca/book-vaccine/ and booking an appointment. The toll-free number 1-833-943-3900 is also available for booking support.
All remaining Covid-19 vaccination opportunities are outlined on the health unit’s Covid-19 vaccination page at www.swpublichealth.ca/covid19vaccine. Those who are more than six months out from their last dose are encouraged to drop by 1230 Talbot Street St. Thomas or 410 Buller Street Woodstock between 9am and noon and 1 and 4pm, Monday – Friday until the clinics are closed.
