Southwestern Public Health encourages social connection for seniors at upcoming Aging Well Road Shows

Southwestern Public Health (SWPH) has partnered with GenWell, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening social connections, to promote Seniors Loneliness Awareness Week from June 15-21. The two organizations are encouraging residents to recognize the importance of meaningful relationships and taking simple actions to help older adults feel connected, supported, and valued in their communities.

“Social connections are the lifelines that sustain us, particularly as we age. They are not optional luxuries but essential components of our well-being,” says Meagan Lichti, Public Health Nurse and Chair of the Oxford and Elgin St. Thomas Age Friendly Committees.

For local resident Rita Veel, reaching out to others after the loss of her husband helped her find support and companionship.

"This support group of four has been a lifesaver for each one of us," said Veel. "The sadness has not left, but we have made the decision to see the happy in our next chapter. So, reach out, like my friend did. Small connections can make a big difference."

Her story serves as a reminder that a simple phone call, walk, or coffee invitation can help someone feel connected and supported.

"Rita's story demonstrates how meaningful social connections can support healthy aging and improve well-being," said Lichti. "During Seniors Loneliness Awareness Week, we encourage everyone to take a moment to connect with an older adult in their life. Whether it's a phone call, a visit, or attending a community event together, small actions can have a lasting impact."

The Oxford Age-Friendly Committee is excited to be hosting the first dates of their Aging Well Road Shows during Seniors Loneliness Awareness Week. These free events provide older adults an opportunity to learn about local services, while connecting with community organizations and neighbours. Attendees will hear presentations, explore resources, enjoy refreshments, and build meaningful connections in a welcoming environment.
