Southwestern Public Health highlights free and low‑cost dental services during Oral Health Month
Nearly one in five residents (20.9 per cent) in the Southwestern Public Health (SWPH) region avoided visiting the dentist in 2017–2018 because of cost, according to SWPH’s 2025 Oral Health Status Report. Yet untreated oral health issues can cause serious health concerns, such as pain and infection, interfere with eating and daily life, and contribute to worse outcomes for chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease.
“Oral health is essential at every stage of life,” says Colin Cook, Health Promoter, Southwestern Public Health. “When people delay dental care because of cost, the impacts can be serious, leading to pain, infection, and avoidable health complications. Access to preventive care helps people stay healthy and reduces the need for more urgent treatment later.”
This Oral Health Month, SWPH is highlighting the importance of oral health and the free and low‑cost dental services available to eligible children, seniors, and adults across Oxford County, Elgin County, and the City of St. Thomas. SWPH provides oral health programs that focus on prevention, early intervention, and education. Available services include:
Healthy Smiles Ontario
Free dental care for eligible children and youth 17 years and under from low‑income households. Services may include check‑ups, cleanings, fillings, X‑rays, and emergency care.
Seniors Dental Care Program
Free dental care for eligible low‑income seniors aged 65 and older who do not have dental coverage. Services help reduce pain, infection, and barriers to eating and speaking.
Oral health screening and education
Public health dental teams provide screening, fluoride varnish, and education through schools, childcare settings, and community programs to help establish healthy behaviours that help prevent oral health issues.
Support and referrals
SWPH helps connect eligible residents to dental services such as emergency care, fillings, and cleanings at our clinics or with the assistance of local dental providers.
Residents in the SWPH region are encouraged to visit the SWPH website or call 1-800-922-0096 learn more about oral health programs, eligibility requirements, and how to apply.
Please note that SWPH dental clinics do not currently provide services through the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). Visit the Canadian Dental Care Plan website for details.
