Statement regarding wildfire smoke in region

Current air quality conditions in Elgin and Oxford Counties have reached the Very High-Risk category due to wildfire smoke, with Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) values at or above 10. Environment and Climate Change Canada has also issued an Air Quality Warning for the region.

Southwestern Public Health is reminding residents of the health risks associated with wildfire smoke.

“Wildfire smoke may impact your health even if you can't smell it. Limit outdoor exertion when possible and check local air quality conditions through Environment and Climate Change Canada before heading outside. The small particles – known at particulate matter – in wildfire smoke carries the greatest health concern, as they can travel deep into the lungs when inhaled and cause irritation or inflammation,” says Dr. Ninh Tran, Medical Officer of Health at Southwestern Public Health.

Some people have a higher health risk from exposure to wildfire smoke, such as infants and young children, the elderly, people who work outside, pregnant individuals, and those who have chronic health conditions. Reduce the health impact of wildfire smoke by staying indoors with windows and doors closed, or by visiting a public indoor space such as a library or community centre.

“If you need to spend time outdoors, wearing a well-fitting and properly worn respirator-style mask, such as a NIOSH-certified N95 mask or equivalent, can help limit exposure to fine particles in smoke,” says Tran.

During high-risk air quality days, a limited supply of N95 masks are made available to local residents who may be at greater risk from wildfire smoke, or those who need to spend time outdoors. These are in a limited supply and available while supplies last. Visit the Southwestern Public Health website for a list of locations for pick-up within the community.

Residents are encouraged to monitor for Air Quality Health Index updates through Environment and Climate Change Canada.
