Active and Safe Routes to School (ASRTS) is community partners from several organizations throughout the Counties of Elgin, Middlesex, Oxford and the cities of London and St. Thomas working together to help create a safe school community where active transportation such as walking and wheeling is an easy choice for children and families to get to and from school. ASRTS works to help schools create a school culture that embrace active transportation through walking and biking programs and School Travel Planning.
Walking and wheeling to school is one of the easiest ways that children can build physical activity into their daily routine and it will also:
- Improve their physical and mental health
- Improve traffic and safety around your school
- Improve air quality and help the environment
- Have students arrive at school alert and ready to learn
- Feel more connected to their community
If children walked for all trips less than one kilometre rather than being driven, they would take an average of 2, 238 additional steps per day! - 2014 Active Healthy Kids Canada Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth.
School Travel Planning is a program that builds on the strengths of a school community and works on concerns through an Action Plan to help make active transportation a choice for students and families. To learn more about School Travel Planning visit www.activesaferoutes.ca
