What Are Illicit Drugs?

“Illicit drugs” is a commonly used term that refers to certain substances listed under the 1997 Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. These substances include heroin, cocaine and synthetic substances such as LSD and ecstasy.

The regulations under the Act outline the conditions under which certain drugs may be used for legitimate reasons, such as medical treatment. The regulations also set out the conditions under which the possession, production, and sale of such substances are illegal.
