The History Behind Tanning
Tans were not always popular and even today some parts of the world go to great length to keep their skin pale and even to lighten it. Aged by the Sun—Photoaging
Photoaging is early aging of the skin caused by repeated exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun but may also be from artificial UVR from indoor tanning.
Exposing unprotected skin over and over during a lifetime is a big factor in how your skin ages. When you see old school friends years later and are surprised how different you look despite being about the same age, the sun could be part of this answer.
Early Signs of Photoaging
- Fine wrinkles around the eyes and mouth
- Frown lines on forehead
- Spider veins on the nose, cheeks and neck
- Dark spots like freckles, age or liver spots and an uneven skin colour
- A general loss of skin tone
- Taut lips that start to lose colour & fullness
Later Signs of Photoaging
- Deeper creases and lines around the eyes and mouth
- Forehead frown lines that can be seen when not frowning
- Skin is leathery and sags
- Age or liver spots appear on the face and hands
- Broken blood vessels on the nose and cheeks
- Lips are drawn, pale and thin
- Skin on sun-exposed sites may bruise more easily
- Red, rough scaly spots called actinic keratosis may appear—these pre-cancerous spots require treatment to prevent them from changing into skin cancer.
On sun-exposed skin, up to 90% of skin aging is due to the harmful effects of the sun’s UV rays.
You Can Prevent Photoaging!
- Protect your skin when you are outside but especially between 11 am & 3 pm.
- Cover up with clothes and a hat.
- Seek shade whenever possible. Take some portable shade with you.
- Wear a minimum SPF30+ broad spectrum sunscreen and apply a SPF30 lip balm.
- Apply your sunscreen before you get dressed for the day and then reapply every 2-3 hours.
