Common Childhood Infections

How can I protect my child from infections?

  • Children get sick, we all do from time to time. You can protect your child (and family) from illness by:
    • Washing your hands with soap and water
    • Teaching your children to cover their coughs and sneezes
    • Clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces in your home (door handles, counter tops etc)
    • Follow cooking guidelines
    • Avoid seeing other people if you are ill (stay home from school, and work)

I think my child is sick, what should I do?

  • If you are concerned for your child’s health, you should either call telehealth at: 811 or make an appointment with your family health care provider
  • If you think it is an emergency do not hesitate to call 911

My child has an infectious disease, what should I do?

  • If your child has a common childhood infectious disease (such as pink eye, fifth disease, hand foot mouth disease, ring worm or others) please download and review the Guide to Common Childhood Infections
  • If your child has headlice please refer to the Head Lice information page on the Caring for Kids website.

Where do I go if I want more information on infectious diseases?

  • We have an Infectious Disease Team who are responsible for case and contact work within our communities. They also have a wealth of knowledge on infectious diseases
