Southwestern Public Health urges caution and issues recommendations for Easter celebrations
With a long weekend approaching, families across the region are gearing up for traditional family gatherings, religious services, and other community events to mark the season. For the first time in two years, there are no legislated public health measures restricting holiday gatherings.
Southwestern Public Health’s new Acting Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Ninh Tran, asks the residents of Oxford County, Elgin County, and the City of St. Thomas to instead voluntarily take the necessary steps to protect the most vulnerable.
“Our team has released a series of recommendations for living in this pandemic that are designed to lessen transmission and protect our most vulnerable. We must consider our own risk factors, as well as those of the people we socialize with,” says Tran. “COVID-19 is an unwelcome guest. Please stay home when feeling unwell, socialize outdoors or in well ventilated spaces, and wear a mask while socializing indoors with people from outside your household, especially if any of your guests are elderly or immune compromised.” he adds.
The new guidance document also encourages party planners to keep guest lists small, encourage self-screening before attendance and to continue with excellent hand hygiene practices.
The health unit has recently opened the doors for fourth doses for individuals who are 60+ and at least 90 days past their last dose. Recent data from Public Health Ontario indicates that protection from symptomatic infection decreases significantly over time. It is of vital importance that individuals roll up their sleeves for every dose they are eligible for to prevent serious illness or hospitalization.
