Wishing you a Healthy School Year
Back to School with your Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Ninh Tran
Even though it’s been a few years since I was in the classroom as a student, I love this season for its return to routine and learning.
I know, however, that it’s a busy and sometimes stressful time for parents as you transition your children from the less structured summer months to a season of bus schedules, homework, and school lunches.
The team here at Southwestern Public Health is here to support you through this time of transition and all year long.
We have a wonderful group of public health nurses that support all local schools. If you’d like to learn more about the role of these public health nurses, we’ve got a 2-minute video about how they support healthy schools.
Southwestern Public Health’s website also features information for parents and caregivers on everything from oral health in schools to the grade 7 immunization program, to packing a lunch your kid will munch to the Act-i-Pass program – which allows children in grade 5 to participate in a wealth of physical activities – for free!
If you don’t already, I hope you’ll follow us on social media (Facebook and Instagram are the ways we mostly commonly communicate with the parents of young children), and sign-up for our newsletter. We promise we won’t send you too many messages!
I hope that the nice weather lasts well into the fall, and you and your children can enjoy some treasured family time at the beautiful parks, beaches, and natural areas in the Southwestern Public Health region. That time spent together in nature is one of the best things we can do for the physical and mental health of our families.
And of course, fall also brings the return of respiratory illness "season." Please practice good hand washing with your children, teach them to cough and sneeze into their elbows, and keep them home from school when they are sick.
Wishing you a safe and healthy return to learning,
Dr. Ninh Tran, Medical Officer of Health
