Grade 7 Immunization Program
We offer students in grade 7 three vaccines through the school immunization program:
- Hepatitis B
- Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
- Meningococcal disease (required to go to school)
Students will receive an information package and vaccine consent form to bring home in early September. Learn more about vaccines for children at school from Ontario’s Ministry of Health.

What if my child misses the vaccine clinic at school?
We can give your child the vaccines the next time we visit the school. If your child does not finish their vaccines at school in grade 7, we will see them at the school in grade 8. You can also get vaccines from your health care provider. If you do not have a health care provider, we may be able to provide the vaccines.
Can my child provide his/her own consent to get immunized?
In Ontario, consent for medical procedures is based on a person’s understanding of the situation, not their age. We prefer to have parental consent to immunize elementary school students, but it is not required by law.
What if my child has a reaction to a vaccine?
The most common side effects are pain, redness or swelling where the needle was given. Some children may feel lightheaded or dizzy from worrying about the needle. Our nurses are trained to respond to reactions that may happen after a vaccine. Nurses stay at the school for 15 minutes after the last immunization is given to make sure all students are well.
If you think your child has had a reaction, contact your health care provider. Allergic reactions are extremely rare. If you notice symptoms such as spreading hives (red patches on skin), wheezing, trouble breathing, pale or blue skin or swelling of the face/mouth, get medical attention immediately.
